中国学者经常误用名词 variety 。这个单词有三种意思，而且也有三种对应的用法，在此，我将分别讨论各种用法。

1. 1. 第一种用法

意义：不同的种类。
作用：指代多项事物为一组。

      2. A variety of interesting results follow immediately from this theorem.

此处最需要注意的重点是，variety 在这种用法中指代多项事物，因此被视为复数名词。所以，在其作为主语时，例如例句 (2)，对应的动词也必须使用复数形式。

1. 1. 第二种用法

意义：多样性。
作用：描述一种或多种事物所具有的一种性质。

1. 1. 3. The most important point to note here is the great variety of adaptive behavior exhibited within the Microhexura genus.
      4. In this particular case, variety is not necessarily desirable.

与第一种用法相反，variety 在此处讨论的用法中并不是指代多项个别事物；反之，它是指由多个部分或片段组成的整体所表现出的差别。这种差别（即讨论中整体的多样性）是一项单一事物，因此 variety 在这种用法中是单数名词。此外，如例句 (4) 所示，variety 以目前的方式使用时，往往被视为不可数形式。
